What is Arthritis?
The term arthritis is used to refer to a disorder that affects the joints. It is a disease that causes painful inflammation and stiffness in the joints. It has become a leading cause of work-related disability. There are more than 100 types of health problems based on joints that come with arthritis but Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid are the most common types of arthritis. Arthritis makes it difficult for a person to remain physically active and in some cases it even makes homebound.
Types of Arthritis
There are so many types of Arthritis and some of the common kinds of arthritis are:
Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic conditions of the joints. It is a condition in which the cartilage becomes rough and brittle and the bone underneath the cartilage thickens out. It is more common among females than males. There are some cases in which synovial membrane and the joint capsule thickens which leads to an increase in the amount of fluid in the joint, which makes the joint stiff and painful.
It is a condition in which disease affects the joints and tendons and in this type, there chances that it can affect other organs as well. This inflammation causes pain and difficulty in movement. Some of the symptoms that indicate this type are swollen inflamed joints, redness, warm touch etc.. It starts with the pain and the loss of strength and makes the movement difficult. Then it will make you feel unwell and extremely tired.
3. Ankylosing spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a condition under which the joints of the lower back are affected and in severe cases, spine joints lose its movement. Back pain is the main symptom of this type which often comes and goes. Inflammation starts at the edges of the vertebral joints which leads to the formation of scar tissue in between the bones which makes bones stiff. It usually affects the spine, shoulder, and hips. It starts with the pain and stiffness and makes the movement of the chest limited.
People suffering from fibromyalgia are more sensitive towards pain and pressure. Pain, extreme tiredness, sleep disturbance etc are the common symptoms of this type and it is associated with anxiety, depression, stress etc.. The combination of genetics and environmental factors are said to be the cause of fibromyalgia.
Gout is a condition in which the crystals build up in the body and leads to the pain in the joints. We all have the production of uric acid in the blood which we pass in the urine but when anyone is unable to pass enough uric acid and the level of uric acid increases in the blood, it leads to the formation of crystals. It usually attacks the joints at the base of the big toe. But it can affect other joints as well such as ankles, knees, elbows etc..
Symptoms of Arthritis
Pain is the common symptom of all types of arthritis but the severity of the pain varies from person to person. It depends on the type of arthritis. Other symptoms that can be experienced while suffering from arthritis include stiffness (which may worsen any time), weight loss, poor sleep, muscle aches, tenderness, difficulty in movement, loss or flexibility etc..
There are several types of medications that are used for the treatment of arthritis but the treatment options vary from person to person depending on the type of arthritis. Many studies have shown that physical exercise of the particular joint can provide long term pain relief. Exercise often focuses on improving muscle strength and arthritis makes the joints stiff.
