Obesity is one of the health concerns across the world. Research suggests that millions of people in the world are struggling with obesity and constantly look for ways to reduce weight and to fight the consequences of being overweight.

Obesity is a serious health problem which is characterized by the excessive accumulation of fat in the body to an extent that it adversely affects health. Being fat or obese is not only associated with the appearance but it is one of the risk factors for major health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other serious health problems.

Generally, obesity occurs when an individual regularly consumes more calories than needed. The excess calories are stored in the body in the form of fat and develop obesity. In other words, obesity is a disease which results due to an imbalance between the calories intake and energy expenditure.

Although it is true that obesity is a multifactorial disorder and both genes and environmental factors play a role in the development of obesity, lifestyle factors are equally important. There are various lifestyle habits or daily habits that might be playing a role in weight gain. Some of the factors include:

1. Lack of sleep

Research suggests that these days a large number of people are dealing with sleep debt, which is responsible for various health problems, including obesity. Sleep is a process that plays an important role to maintain a balance between psychological, emotional, and physical health. There is evidence that suggests that lack of sleep is strongly associated with high body mass index. Body mass index is a way to measure fat in the body.

Studies have repeatedly found a link between reduced sleep and increased weight. The possible relationship between the two is an alteration of the neuroendocrine control of appetite that is characterized by an increase in the levels of orexigenic factor ghrelin and a decrease in the levels of the orexigenic hormone leptin. These endocrine changes can be considered to be the possible cause of weight gain.

2. Skipping breakfast

Several studies have reported that breakfast skipping is associated with various health problems, including obesity. Studies have reported that skipping breakfast can have a significant impact on body weight and nutrient intake. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it is associated with higher calcium and fiber intake and reduced body mass index. Many people believe that skipping breakfast can help in weight loss as it will decrease calorie intake, but this is absolutely false. In fact, skipping breakfast is one of the causes of weight gain. Starvation can lead to weight loss.

There are various reasons that states why skipping breakfast could lead to weight gain. One of the reasons includes that skipping breakfast leads to lower satiety as compared to when breakfast is consumed. Therefore skipping breakfast is often accompanied by overeating when having a meal. Therefore, the intake of more calories than required which results in weight gain.

3. Sedentary lifestyle

The sedentary lifestyle is one of the most common causes of obesity. Not only in adults but also in children. Adopting a sedentary lifestyle is the biggest mistake one can do as it is not only associated with obesity but also with many other chronic diseases. Sedentary behavior includes all those activities that include low energy expenditure such as prolonged sitting, long screen time, and leisure time.

Sedentary behavior is strongly associated with weight gain as it is characterized by little or no physical movement. The reason behind this correlation is that weight management largely depends on the number of calories absorbed and the total number of calories burnt. People who are involved in sedentary behavior have increased calorie intake and no or little energy expenditure. Therefore causes weight gain.  

4. Midnight snacking

It has been observed that people who are involved in midnight snacking on a daily basis are overweight and obese. Eating late at night will definitely make you gain weight and this is because the calories consumed from the food is more likely to store as fat in the body which leads to weight gain.

Evidence suggests that midnight snacking is often accompanied by lack of sleep and as stated above, lack of sleep is one of the common causes of weight gain or obesity. Intake of calories and sleep debt both contributes to obesity and when both these factors work together, it can have an adverse impact on the health of an individual. Not only in terms of weight gain but also other health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
