Disorders of a penis that causes problems with erections
Erectile function is a complex function that involves various different mechanisms and impairment in any of the mechanism can cause problems that can lead to unsatisfactory sexual intercourse. Any problem with the erectile function has a direct impact on the life of a person as it not only cause problems with erections but is associated with other emotional problems as well.
Peyronie’s disease is characterized by the hardening of tissues in the penis and causes a hard lump on the lining of the erectile tissues that hold the blood in the penis during erections. Most often, the hard lump occurs at the point where the penis curves.
The Peyronie's disease is the result of an injury or repeated injuries to the penis. It begins with localized inflammation or swelling which hardens into the lump on the upper and lower side of the penis. The underlying etiology of Peyronie's disease is believed to be an imbalance between profibrotic and antifibrotic substances.
Peyronie’s disease is basically present in two stages - the acute stage and the chronic stage. The acute phase includes the lump beneath the skin of the penis and is accompanied by the pain which worsens during erection. On the other hand, the chronic stage means the end of the plaque growth and the pain that is experienced during the acute stage ends.
It is a serious disorder that affects the quality of life of a person and involves various complications such as erectile dysfunction, inability to have sexual intercourse, stress, and relationship problems. Peyronie’s disease is also associated with several medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, raised cholesterol levels and atherosclerosis.
Phimosis is defined as an inability of the penis to extend beyond the prepuce. The prepuce is the retractable covering the glans penis and it serves various functions such as immunological, erogenous and protective. Phimosis is a condition in which the prepuce cannot be retracted over the glans penis and causes scarring that often appears as a contracted white fibrous ring around the preputial orifice.
If an individual is facing problems with erections, phimosis can be one of the cause. It can be a congenital problem, that is a problem that is present from birth or it can also arise later in the life due to the scarring. Phimosis is categorized into two types:
- Physiologic Phimosis - In this type, children are born with a tight foreskin at birth and over time, separation occurs naturally. It is a normal condition for the uncircumcised child and is usually resolved.
- Pathologic Phimosis - This type of phimosis is a result of scarring or any kind of an infection. Also, forceful foreskin retraction can lead to bleeding and psychological trauma.
Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common problems that is faced by the men worldwide and it adversely affects the life of a man. Erectile dysfunction is defined as a condition in which a man finds himself incapable of getting or maintaining erections sufficient enough to have a satisfactory sexual intercourse.
Although, advancing age is one of the most common causes of erectile dysfunction but it is not the only cause of it. Erectile dysfunction can happen to any men and there are various other factors that could lead to the development of this sexual disorder such as stress, depression, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and injury to the penis.
In most men, erectile dysfunction can be cured and there are many drugs available to treat this problem such as Cialis, Viagra, and Levitra. A firm erection requires a good arterial inflow of blood and an efficient reduction of venous outflow. These drugs allow good inflow of blood in the penis region and allow a man to have a firm erection and satisfactory sexual intercourse.
Balanitis is a medical condition that causes an inflammation at the end of the penis and it is characterized by a pink or red rash, difficulty retracting the foreskin, itching, pain, and tenderness. Balanitis can be caused due to an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast that are present on the skin of the glans of the penis. There are various causes of balanitis which include minor trauma, poor hygiene, allergies and irritants and some skin conditions. Balanitis is of three types:
- Zoon’s balanitis
- Circinate balanitis
- Pseudoepitheliomatous keratotic and micaceous balanitis
