Diabetes is the disease wherein the body stops responding to the hormone called insulin. Insulin is the hormone that does the work of regulating the extraction of glucose from sugar consumption. The hormone is produced by the pancreas and when the body stops reacting to the production of insulin, it results in excess of glucose leading to the symptoms which are collectively termed as diabetes. Diabetes can be of two types, Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes
- Being Hungry and Exhausted all the time: The cells need insulin to bring the glucose inside the body. Generally, our body converts the food we eat into glucose that the cells use for energy. So, the problem arises when your body does not make enough or any insulin and glucose can’t get into them, it often leads to fatigue and hunger.
- Being Thirsty all the time: If you have diabetes, the muscles and other tissues of the body might get dehydrated and this is because the level of blood sugar rises which pulls all the fluid.
- Peeing Frequently: When being thirsty is one of the symptoms among the diabetics, then peeing frequently is likely to be another one. This is because normally your body soaks the glucose as soon as it passes through the kidneys. But, if you have diabetes, your kidneys won’t be able to bring all the glucose within which causes it to produce more urine and that consumes all the fluids. When all the fluids are released from the body, you will again feel thirsty.
- Blurred Vision: Since you frequently have an urge to pee and feel thirsty, this imbalance will definitely create complications in the body. The levels of fluid keep changing in it that may lead to the swelling in your eyes. According to the studies, diabetes damage the blood vessels in the retina. A condition called Diabetic Retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in the retina leak blood and other fluids which results in clouded vision. It may occur to both the eyes. If a person has diabetes for very long, he is more prone to blurred vision. If retinopathy is left untreated, there is a chance of a person going blind.
- Cuts and Wounds Unhealed: This might be because your body loses the immunity because of bacteria that thrive when your sugar levels in the blood are too high. Blood sugar can also damage the nerves. Yeast infection can also take place usually among women in the vagina, under breasts or between fingers and toes. It also hinders your body to heal. Since white blood cells are responsible for healing purpose, high blood sugar level disturbs it.
- Weight Loss: This is because your body is unable to get energy from the food you eat and burns down the muscle and fat for energy. It will also break down other energy sources in the body which will lead to weight loss.
Causes of Diabetes
The factors that lead to diabetes is different for the kind of diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is majorly caused due to the destruction of the body’s capacity to regulate the insulin level in the body. This, in turn, leads to abnormal glucose level, hence the symptoms. Such condition may arise due to factors like a bacterial infection, unchecked eating pattern, genetic disposition, etc.
Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is the outcome of factors like obesity, family history of the disease, sedentary lifestyle, etc.
1. Avoid Food items that affect your Blood Sugar Level: There are various food items like refined sugar, grains, hydrogenated oils, etc that plays the major culprit in increasing the sugar level. These kinds of edibles enter your bloodstream and disturb the balance of body and can cause extreme elevations in blood glucose. On the other hand, hydrogenated oils are processed at a very high temperature, and are mixed with several bleaching agents, that often lead to serious health problems including Diabetes as well.
2. Do not Smoke: Smoking is usually prohibited for diabetes patients as it increases your risk of various diabetes complications which are Heart Disease, Stroke, Kidney problem, eye problem, etc.
3. Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol level under control: Your high blood pressure can damage the blood vessels. Cholesterol is a concerning issue as well and when high blood pressure and cholesterol teams up, they can result in the heart attack, stroke, or other life-threatening diseases.
4. Regular Exercise keeps your glucose level in control: Physical activities are always the most important treatment plan. More physical activities, more improvement in insulin level in the body. With ample exercising, the level of glucose remains in check and the insulin is regulated. It also tries to get rid of symptoms and longtime health-related issues.
5. Keep updating your vaccines: There is a risk that high blood sugar can weaken your immune system, that often creates complications among diabetes patients. Do ask your doctors about all the vaccines like Flu vaccines, Pneumonia vaccines, and Hepatitis vaccines. 6. Take proper care of your teeth and feet: Diabetes may make your teeth and feet more prone to infections which could turn out to be really bad in the future. High blood sugar usually reduces the blood flow and damage the nerve cells of feet leaving them blistered and dry, that leads to pain and feet infections. Therefore, it is necessary to wash your feet in lukewarm water, dry them and properly moisturize them.

- Never drink on an empty stomach. It will create complications.
- Do not skip food if you are going to drink.
- Do not change your medications without consulting the doctor.
- Do not perform or participate in any kind of physical activities like dancing or exercising while you are drunk.
- Do not go to bed without checking your blood sugar level.
- Don’t guzzle your drink down.
- Don’t eat fried food and junk while drinking.
- Don’t drink immediately after exercising. Relax for some time.
- It is illegal to drink if you are under 18 years.
- Do not skip your medicines.
How many pints of alcohol is advisable for diabetics?
If you really enjoy alcohol despite being diabetic, it is often recommended to stick to a specific limitation:
- For men, it is advisable to drink 3 units
- For women, it is recommended to drink 2 units.
