Just as everything changes with age, your vagina does, too. While natural shifts in pelvic floor strength and vulvar skin thickness do not occur overnight, you just might be able to be more prepared for those changes by being aware of when and what goes down to keep up with your vagina health.

The vagina is a tube of muscle inside a woman's body that runs from the cervix (the opening of the womb) to the vaginal opening.

The external sex organs, which are called the vulva, surround the vaginal opening.

Looking after your everyday health can help keep your vagina in good shape, says Dr. Suzy Elneil, consultant in urogynaecology at University College Hospital, London, and spokesperson for Wellbeing of Women.

"Generally, good vaginal health is maintained by making sure you are in good general health," she explains. "This includes a healthy diet and exercise.”

"Normal exercise helps maintain good vaginal function, like walking and running help the pelvic floor to tone up and ensure good general health."

Though, the vagina is designed to keep itself clean with the help of natural secretions (vaginal discharge), here are some tips to help you to keep your vagina keep clean and healthy:

1. Wash Your Vagina

 

It is better to avoid perfumed soaps, gels, and antiseptics as these can affect the healthy balance of bacteria and pH levels in the vagina and cause irritation.

Use plain, unperfumed soaps to wash the area around the vagina (the vulva) gently every day.

"During your period, washing more than once a day may be helpful," says Dr. Elneil, who points out that keeping the perineal area between the vagina and anus clean is important, too.

"Good perineal hygiene is necessary by washing that area at least once a day using your normal bathing routines."

"All women are different," says Professor Lamont. "Some may wash with perfumed soap and not notice any problems.”

"But if a woman has vulval irritation or symptoms, one of the first things you can do is use non-allergenic, plain soaps to see if that helps."

 

2. Keep Your Pubic Hair

 

It is okay to do a bit of trimming or removing hair along your swimsuit line. No one says it needs to be unruly — although you should rock it however you want! — but please, do keep your pubic hair.

Pubic hair serves many purposes. It protects your downstairs from extra bacteria, and it also eliminates issues related to friction and sweating. It keeps your vagina fresh and healthy. Less hair removal also means less itch as the hair grows back, fewer cuts and scrapes, and fewer ingrown hairs.

3. Avoid Scented wipes And Vaginal Deodorants

 

These perfumed products can disrupt the vagina’s health.

"If nature had intended the vagina to smell like roses or lavender, it would have made the vagina smell like roses or lavender," says Professor Lamont.

Washing with water and plain soap should be all you need to keep your vagina healthy. It's normal for the vagina to have a certain scent.

"Vaginal odor can change at different times of the reproductive cycle and shouldn't always be thought of as being a sign of infection or illness," says Dr. Elneil.

If you're worried about the way your vagina smells, the smell is unpleasant or you're using perfumed products to cover up your vagina's smell, you should see your gynecologist. You might have an infection that needs treatment.

 

4. Have Safer Sex

 

One of the best and easiest things you can do for vaginal health is to practice safer sex. Here are a few tips for staying safe and maintaining your sexual health:

(i)Use Protection

That could be a condom, dental dam, or gloves. It’s not rocket science, and you already know you should, so just do it.

Get tested regularly for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You should get tested after any partners you exchange genital fluids with.

(ii)Make Sure You Check The Condom Ingredients

There are a ton of brands that are made with spermicides. Spermicides aren’t very healthy for the vagina, as they can kill good bacteria in there, too. 

Use other forms of birth control if available to make for a happier, healthier vagina.

(iii)You Can Use A Vaginal Condom

It is a great option. Because it is not latex, it can be used no matter what lubricant you choose, though it does come pre-lubricated with a silicone-based product.

 

5. Wear Breathable Clothing

 

Breathable clothing and fabrics make happy vaginas! Cotton underwear is great. It has moisture-wicking properties to limit the amount of wetness that can promote bacterial growth. So, it leaves your vagina fresh and healthy.

Changing out of wet clothing quickly can help limit issues, as well. Regardless of the kind of underwear you like, just make sure to change it daily.
