Usually, transient and intermittent insomnia occurs due to the causes such as stress, change in environment, the side effects of certain medicines and extreme temperature. Chronic insomnia is a complex type and it occurs due to the combination of factors and some underlying physical or mental disorder. But in an individual having hyperthyroidism, the production of cortisol is increased and an increased release of cortisol affect the sleep of a person. High cortisol level in the body disrupts the sleep and makes it difficult for the person to sleep. As a result, insomnia occurs.
