The beginning of a woman’s reproductive years usually begins when she start getting periods. Also called menstruation, it is the process in which a woman discharge blood and other material from the lining of the uterus at an interval of 28-35 days. Another term for menstruation is menses that is a part of the normal sexual health of a woman during her reproductive years. Periods in women generally start at the age of 8 to 16 yrs old.
Every woman has two ovaries that contain a number of eggs. Every month during the reproductive years, an egg will be released. When the womb get prepared for the lining, the egg should be fertilized. If it is not the case i.e. the egg is not fertilized, the lining will not be needed anymore and it will shed together with the egg. When we see the shedding of blood, we call them periods. In case the egg is fertilized, it will need a lining and it will not shed. In that situation period stops and pregnancy starts.
When a woman gets periods, she experiences cramps that are termed as menstrual cramps. They are painful sensations that affect every woman either before periods or during them. The pain ranges from dull to severe. They usually tend to begin when an egg is released from the ovaries and it travels all the way down to fallopian tubes. Pain can occur anywhere from lower abdomen or back. You may experience some signs if you are likely to get periods in coming time. Sometimes, emotional stress can also increase the chances of getting menstrual cramps. There are other symptoms that can tell you that you are having menstrual cramps:
- Pain in thighs or lower abdomen.
What might be the causes?
If you are also unaware of the causes, then you must know that every 28 days, there is no sperm so it could fertilize the egg, in that case, the uterus contracts to expel its lining. A hormone called prostaglandin is responsible for triggering this process. They cause muscle contraction that leads to the cramps in the abdomen and can make a person nauseated as well.
Some risk factors might include:
- Never given birth.
- Early puberty
- Young age
- Women who face sleeping problems have reported that they get menstrual cramps every time. This means sufficient sleep plays a major role in helping a person to get rid of the period pain.
If the pain is unbearable while you are having periods, you can take over-the-counter medicines, birth control treatments or some home remedies that can help relieve the pain. Medicines like anti-prostaglandins effectively work in reducing the cramping in the uterus as well as relieve the discomfort. Medicines may be painkillers, NSAIDs which alone can lower the pain and provide relief to the woman.
There are some home remedies as well that can help a woman in minimizing the menstrual cramps:
- Soaking in a hot bath can help to relieve the cramps
- You can apply hot water bottle, heated pads in your stomach to get rid of the pain.
- By drinking warm beverages like warm tea can make you relax and comfortable.
- According to one study, it has been found that ginger helps women if they take it within 3-4 days of their periods.
There are several safety measures that can be taken in order to reduce the risk of cramps like:
- Regular exercise
- Opting for healthy food
- Reducing stress
- Acupuncture is a good technique to reduce the menstrual cramps.
