3 Things To Know About Premature Ejaculation
What is Premature Ejaculation?
Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man regularly ejaculates much sooner than desired. It is basically when a semen is released sooner than a man or his partner would like. It is the quite frustrating situation and it happens before or shortly after an intercourse. Premature ejaculation is of two types:
- Lifelong Premature ejaculation - This type of premature ejaculation occurs since a man is sexually active and it continues throughout life.
- Acquired Premature ejaculation - This type of premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man suddenly begins to experience premature ejaculation over time after having the normal sexual life.
How does Ejaculation works?
Premature ejaculation is also known as rapid ejaculation, premature climax, and early ejaculation. It is an irritating problem that makes the sexual intercourse less enjoyable and creates problems in the relationship. Ejaculation is controlled by chemicals which are known as neurotransmitters and are released by nerve cells in the brain. A brain receives signals when the body is sexually stimulated and when a man reaches a certain level of excitement, a brain signals the male reproductive system and hence an ejaculation occurs. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that prevents ejaculation and when the level of serotonin is disrupted, it causes premature ejaculation. It has many negative impacts on the life and seriously affects the quality of life of a man and his relationship with his partner. It often makes men embarrassed and they don’t prefer talking about it. Ejaculation has two phases:
- Emission - In this phase, sperm moves from the testicles to the prostate and then mixes with seminal fluid to make semen.
- Expulsion - In this phase of ejaculation, muscles at the base of penis contracts and this builds pressure that forces semen out of the penis.
There are many reasons why men have premature ejaculation and these reasons can be biological, emotional and/or chemical reasons. Numerous theories have suspected that premature ejaculation can occur due to genetics, neurological, psychological, urological and/or endocrine disorder but the exact cause is unclear.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which is produced in the central nervous system, specifically in the Raphe nuclei which is located in the brainstem. This chemical is made by nerves and it controls the mood, emotions, sexual desire, and sleep. Serotonin in the brain affects the feelings of pleasure, therefore, when the level of serotonin declines in the brain it causes premature ejaculation.
2. Psychological factors
Psychological issues are very common in people suffering from premature ejaculation and feelings play an important role in sexual desires, negative feelings have a negative impact on sexual desires and sexual function. Psychological factors are known to be one of the common factors that are present in all who suffer from sexual dysfunctions. Stress and depression are often accompanied by the lack of sleep and this lack of sleep leads to a decreased level of serotonin in the brain which triggers the body to ejaculate rapidly. According to numerous studies, premature ejaculation can also be a result of masturbating quickly during an adolescence. It is noticed that men with premature ejaculation also have:
- Temporary depression
- Relationship problems
- Lack of confidence
3. Advancing age
Age is not a direct cause of premature ejaculation as it can happen to men of any age. But still, advancing age causes changes the body and can lead to the fluctuations in the level of chemicals, hence causes premature ejaculation.
Premature ejaculation is the most common ejaculatory problem in men these days and almost one in every three men faces the problems related to premature ejaculation at some point of life. Abuse of substances like, alcohol and drugs can lead to many sexual dysfunctions, including premature ejaculation. These substances can temporarily delay ejaculation but in the long run, it can lead to permanent premature ejaculation and can also cause other sexual dysfunctions. Premature ejaculation can also be connected to various other things such as:
Prostatitis is known to cause premature ejaculation. It is a serious, painful and distressing condition that causes inflammation in the prostate gland. An inflammation makes the urethra narrow and leads to the blockage of the bladder neck. It causes urinary symptoms like burning sensation, pressure and pain.
- Chronic pelvic pain syndrome
Chronic pelvic pain syndrome is another health problem that can be a cause of premature ejaculation and it is defined as a pressure, discomfort, and chronic pain to the genitalia of males or the pelvis that lasts of more than three months.
