Importance of brushing

Brushing teeth regularly allows us to prevent the development of plaque. Our mouths contain many bacterias. Whenever we eat anything, the food gets stuck to the teeth and overtime when the food particles are removed by brushing, these bacterias along with the mucus and other particles causes the formation of sticky, and colorless plaque on teeth. When the plaques are left on the teeth for a long time it forms tartar that can cause irritation in the gums, and causes gums disease and other dental problems. Brushing regularly and having a proper brushing technique allows the regular removal of the plaque and reduces the risk of any dental problem.

1. Bad breath  

Bad breath, also known as halitosis is the first side effect of not brushing teeth. It is defined as a breath that can be offensive to others and can be caused by various reasons, not limited to bad dental hygiene. It can be a result of some systemic disorder and different types of food. It is an unpleasant condition that causes social restraint. Bad breath can be described in various ways such as unpleasant odor from the mouth air and breath.

According to the studies, bad breath can have multiple origins, the primary source of 90% of cases is bad oral health. Not brushing teeth provides a suitable environment for the bacterias to grow and these bacterias cause the production of odorous compounds that causes bad breath or halitosis.

Poor dental hygiene leads to the multiplication of bacterias that causes bad breath, in turn, increases the risk of experiencing bad breath. These bacterias lead to the degradation of organic substrates such as glucose, proteins present in saliva, retained debris, and crevicular fluid, and leads to the development of halitosis. 2. Tooth decay

Tooth decay, often known as cavities is another problem that can result due to poor dental hygiene. Good dental hygiene is the first and the most important step for the development of tooth decay. When plaque is formed, it produces acids that cause the breakdown of enamel and root surface. The buildup of plaque on the gum line and other surfaces of the mouth increases the risk of developing cavities or tooth decay.

At the initial stage, tooth decay may be left undiagnosed. But as it progresses, it causes symptoms like pain in and around the mouth, sensitivity to hot and cold food, bad breath, spots on the teeth, and food gets trapped in the teeth frequently. 3. Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common dental problem which is defined as an infection which is an early sign of gum disease. It involves the gingival tissues and is characterized by an inflammation of the gums. Most often gingivitis occurs due to the buildup of plaque between the teeth and gums. When the food, germs, and mucus are left stuck to the teeth for a long time, it leads to an infection in the gums. Brushing teeth regularly allows the removal of the food, germs, and mucus from the teeth.

Gingivitis is a common and a mild form of dental disease which can occur due to bad oral hygiene. It can easily be reversed by daily brushing and regular cleaning by dentists. Along with the inflammation of gums, it also causes symptoms like gums that bleed easily, receding gums, and increased tenderness of the gums.

There are many causative factors of gingivitis. The manifestation of gingivitis is classified into two - plaque-induced gingival disease and non-plaque induced gingival disease. Non-plaque induced gingival disease can have causes like bacterial, viral, and fungal infection, genetic disorders, and mucocutaneous diseases.

4. Periodontal disease

The serious form of gingivitis disease is known as periodontal disease. The localized inflammation of the gingiva, known as gingivitis disease is the beginning or the first stage of periodontal disease. When gingivitis is left untreated, it causes periodontal disease. It is a chronic disease which occurs when gingivitis progresses and leads to the loss of gingiva, bone, and ligament.

Periodontal disease is defined as an inflammatory process which is progressive in nature, causing the destruction of tissues. It results from the host response to bacterial antigens and other irritants. The development of the periodontal disease is highly dependent on the presence of pathogenic bacteria, and host response. Apart from poor oral hygiene, some of the possible risk factors for periodontal disease include tobacco consumption, genetics, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, and other local factors such as drug abuse or use of medications.
