Almost each one of us knows that kidneys are one of the most hardworking organs which plays an important role to keep the body function. Most of us have two kidneys, but it is possible to live actively with only one kidney functioning. Kidneys are located on each side of the spine.
Kidneys play various roles in the human body and its primary role is to prevent the build-up of waste and extra fluid in the body. Kidneys as a filter which filters the blood and helps in getting rid of waste and extra fluid from the body in the form of urine. The filter in the kidneys prevents the blood cells and large molecules like proteins from passing.
Why is it important to keep kidneys healthy?
No doubt the most important and primary role that kidneys play is to remove the waste and extra fluid from the body. But at the same time, kidneys also perform extra functions such as secretion of hormones that are essential for preventing the development of other health conditions.
Kidneys secrete a hormone known as renin which is important to regulate blood pressure. Whenever the blood pressure falls, it works by increasing the level of blood pressure and preventing hypotension.
- When kidneys don’t work normally, too much renin can be produced which could to the increase in the blood pressure, resulting in an increased risk of high blood pressure or hypertension.
- Another hormone that is secreted by kidneys is erythropoietin which works in the bone marrow and causes an increase in the blood cells. When kidneys don’t work normally, lack of this hormone occurs in the body resulting in the risk of developing anemia.
- Kidneys are also important for keeping the bones healthy. Calcium and Vitamin D are the most important nutrients for healthy bones. Researchers have shown that people who have kidney disorder also have a calcium deficiency. As a result, the risk of having weak bones.
Now as we know that kidneys play multiple important functions in the body, it is important to take care of some of the preventable causes of kidney disorders. Here is the list of some of the ways that can reduce the risk of suffering from kidney disorder;
Evidence suggests that people who are diabetic patients are at high risk of suffering from kidney disease. Diabetes is a disease which is characterized by high blood glucose level, resulting from insufficient insulin production, impaired insulin action, or both.
The high glucose level in the blood can cause harm to the blood vessels in the kidneys. High glucose level could lead to the blockage of the various vessels in the body, including the blood vessels that carry blood to the kidneys. The lack of blood flow to kidneys leads to its damage. As a result, all the functions of kidneys are impaired.
2. Maintain a healthy weight
Maintaining a healthy weight is an essential component to reduce the risk of suffering from a chronic kidney disorder. Multiple studies have stated the obesity is one of the common cause of developing chronic kidney disease as high body mass index is associated with various alterations in the body which affect almost every part and organ in the body.
Obesity is a metabolic disorder which is characterized by the accumulation of excess fat in the body. The excess accumulation is associated with various structural and hypodynamic alterations in the kidneys. It also affects the metabolism of the body which can cause kidney disorder.
3. Keep yourself hydrated
Keeping the body hydrated is one of the easiest ways to maintain kidney health. Lack of water in the body could lead to the occurrence of the serious disorder known as dehydration, which is further associated with the development of multiple health problems.
Dehydration could lead to the formation of kidney stone. Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than we take in and the kidneys along with the intestine work together to control the level of fluid in the body. When the body is dehydrated, there is a production of urine which contains a high concentration of minerals and waste products. This contributes to the development of kidney stones.
4. Quit smoking
Smoking is one of the leading causes of multiple health problems and a high percentage of deaths across the world. There are various target organs of the damage caused by smoking and kidney is one of the targeted organs. Cigarette smoking contains multiple chemicals which induce the development of various health disorders, such as cancer and renal dysfunction.
There are various mechanisms that could be responsible for renal dysfunction in people who smoke very often. One of the most common mechanism include the effects due to serum creatinine, urea, and uric acid. It has been observed that the level of serum creatinine and urea is often elevated in smokers.
5. Eat healthy food
Diet plays a vital role in maintaining health as the quality and the quantity of food plays a vital role to maintain the overall well being of a person. Diet has the ability to affect all the factors that could be responsible for the development of many different types of disorder such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and stomach disorders.
Diet has an impact on kidneys as well. Unhealthy intake of food can lead to an impairment in various body functions. Unhealthy eating can lead to the accumulation of fat in the body (obesity), increase the blood glucose level (diabetes), and increases the blood pressure in the body, all of these factors could lead to the development of kidney disease.
6. Go for screening
Multiple researchers have suggested that regular medical screening helps to diagnose disease much before they cause complications. There are various screenings that doctors advise their patients to get done such as blood pressure screening, blood glucose level screening, and body mass index. These screenings help to detect the problem in the body much before it starts to affect other organs in the body. Almost every screening acts as a preventive measure for kidney disease.
