Jakavi 20 mg Tablet contains an active ingredient, Ruxolitinib, which is used in the treatment of Polycythemia vera and chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis. Polycythemia vera is a blood cancer in which bone marrow makes too many red blood cells. These excess red blood cells thicken blood, slowing its flow. They may also cause complications, such as blood clots, that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis is a disease in which bone marrow is replaced by the fibrous tissue. Usually, blood is produced in bone marrow. However, in chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis, blood is produced in organs, such as liver and spleen. This helps in stopping or slowing the spread of cancer cells. Ruxolitinib contains JAK1 and JAK2 inhibitors which are used for treating myelofibrosis. The drug works by inhibiting the signalling of cytokines (small cell-signalling protein molecules) and growth factor receptors which use JAK1 and JAK2 for signalling.
