We have all heard that exercise is one of the most effective and easy ways to prevent and treat various health problems, including heart disease. This is true!! The good news is that exercise can reduce the risk of developing heart disease in multiple ways. And at the same time, lack of physical activity can increase the risk of developing heart disease. Studies have stated that people who are not involved in regular physical activity are twice as likely to develop heart disease than those who are active.

Regular exercise can be one of the best steps you can take to have a healthy life. The benefits of exercise are innumerable. Nowadays, a large number of people are living with cardiovascular disease and it has been predicted that cardiovascular disease can be the number one cause of disability and mortality across the world.

Coronary heart disease is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases and is one of the leading cause of death in the United States. Coronary heart disease is a disease which has affects the blood vessels in the body. Blood vessels are responsible to supply the heart with blood and oxygen. Coronary heart disease consists of various heart problems. When there is a buildup of plaque or fatty material in the lining of the blood vessels, it is known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can lead to narrowing of arteries and reduces the flow of blood to the heart muscles.

  • When the insufficient amount of oxygen flows to the heart muscles, it can cause discomfort and pain, known as Angina.
  • When the oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles is completely blocked, it causes a heart attack. If it is not treated properly, it can lead to death.

How does exercise reduce the risk of heart disease?

There are various factors that are responsible for the development of coronary heart diseases, such as cholesterol level, blood pressure, weight management, diabetes mellitus, and many more. As stated above, the benefits of exercise on the human body are innumerable and it includes its benefits on almost all the factors that are responsible for the development of the cardiovascular disease.

1. Cholesterol – It is a fat-like substance that circulates in the bloodstream and is responsible for various functions in the body. But high cholesterol is regarded as one of the major risk factors for heart disease. Cholesterol is basically of two types – high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein. High-density lipoprotein is also known as good cholesterol and a high level of high-density lipoprotein reduces the risk of heart disease. Whereas, low-density lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol and a high level of low-density lipoprotein increases the risk of heart disease. Regular physical activity decreases the risk of having high cholesterol level as it reduces the level of low-density lipoprotein in the blood and increases the risk of high-density lipoprotein in the blood.

2. High Blood Pressure – There is evidence that suggests that high blood pressure can be prevented with regular physical activity. In medical terms, high blood pressure is known as hypertension and it is a condition which occurs when the pressure in the large arteries is at maximal contraction and relaxation. It is believed that regular exercise can have a significant positive effect on the problems associated with blood vessels, including high blood pressure. Blood pressure is presented in two numbers – systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. Exercise is known to be one of the best treatment for high blood pressure. As the intensity of exercise increases, there is a  change in both systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure.

3. Weight – It is one of the major risk factors for heart disease. It is strongly believed that people who are obese or have a high body mass index are at high risk of developing heart disease. There is no denying to say that exercise is the best way to reduce weight. It is one of the best natural treatment that definitely shows positive results. Obesity is defined as a condition in which an individual has fat accumulation in the body and it is believed to result from an increased calorie intake and decreased energy expenditure. Exercise helps to burn extra fat from the body and increases the total energy expenditure.

4. Diabetes mellitus – It is a metabolic disease which very common and a large number of people are living with this disease. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by high glucose level in the blood. Uncontrolled diabetes is associated with various complications and heart disease is one of them. Also, exercise play a vital role in the management of diabetes mellitus. Regular physical activity helps to regulate the sugar level in the blood and prevents the development of any complication that is associated with it. Exercise also helps to decrease the severity of the symptoms of diabetes mellitus.
