What is Votclav Tablet

Votclav Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic medicine used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, throat, sinuses, ears, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, teeth, bones, and joints. It contains an FDA-approved combination of Amoxycillin (500 mg) and Clavulanic Acid (125 mg). It is manufactured in a strip size of 6 tablets by Votary Laboratories (India) Ltd.

Amoxycillin is a penicillin antibiotic that works by damaging the bacterial cell wall. While Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that blocks beta-lactamase enzymes that bacteria produce to destroy antibiotics. This combination makes Votclav effective against more resistant bacteria than Amoxycillin alone.

Take Votclav 625 mg Tablet with or after food, preferably with a simple meal, as advised. It should be taken regularly at evenly spaced intervals, at the same time each day, for the full prescribed course. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is due soon.

Common side effects include Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fungal infection. You can manage Diarrhea with fluids and probiotics during treatment. However, seek urgent medical help for bloody stools, severe abdominal cramps or allergic reactions.

Avoid use if you have severe liver or kidney disease, or a past allergy to Penicillin-class antibiotics. Do not combine with antacids, Warfarin, oral contraceptive pills, Probenecid, or Allopurinol to avoid adverse drug interactions or increased side effects.

Store Amoxicillin-Clavulanate tablets at room temperature from 86°F (under 30°C). Keep out of reach of children.

What are the benefits of taking Votclav tablet

Votclav Tablet helps treat several bacterial infections. Its key benefits and uses include:

  • Treats respiratory and ENT infections: It helps manage infections of the throat, sinus, ear, and lungs caused by susceptible bacteria. This includes Sinusitis, Otitis Media (middle ear infection), Bronchitis, and Pneumonia.
  • Manages urinary, skin, and dental infections: It is commonly used for urinary tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, and dental abscesses.
  • Works against resistant bacteria: Clavulanic Acid protects Amoxycillin from beta-lactamase enzymes. This lends this combination a broader coverage than plain Amoxycillin in many common as well as resistant infections.
  • Helps reduce recurrence: When taken for the full prescribed course, it helps control symptoms, clear the infection, and lower the risk of recurrence.

Safety Advice

Liver Disease

Votclav Tablet should be used carefully in people with liver disease because this combination can affect liver function. In rare cases, it may cause Cholestatic Jaundice or Hepatitis. Dose adjustment and regular monitoring are advised.

Kidney Impairment

Votclav Tablet needs caution in kidney disease because reduced kidney function can slow drug clearance from the system and raise the risk of side effects. Dose adjustment is advised in significant renal impairment.

Pregnant and Breastfeeding women

Since Amoxicillin can pass through breast milk and cause Diarrhea or rash in the infant, it is not recommended while breastfeeding. Votclav Tablets may be used during pregnancy only if prescribed.

Avoid

Do not take Votclav Tablet if you have a known allergy to Penicillin antibiotics or a history of liver problems linked to them. Do not combine with Warfarin, Probenecid, or Allopurinol, because these can raise Amoxycillin levels and increase side effects. Discuss the use of antacids and oral contraceptives, as they affect the effectiveness of Votclav tablets.

FAQs

Can I take Amoxicillin Clavulanic Acid antibiotic tablets for viral infections?

No, Votclav Tablet should not be taken for viral infections such as the cold or flu. It only works against susceptible bacteria, so using it for viral illnesses offers no benefit. Misuse can increase side effects and the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Can Votclav Tablet be taken on an empty stomach?

Yes, it can be taken on an empty stomach, but it is better to take Votclav Tablet with or after food. This helps reduce nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset, which are the common side effects of this broad-spectrum antibiotic medicine.

Can I stop taking Votclav 625 mg Tablet once I feel better?

No, you should not stop Votclav 625 mg tablets early just because symptoms improve and you begin feeling better. Some bacteria can survive if the course remains incomplete, and the infection may return or become harder to treat.

Is Votclav Tablet safe for children?

Yes, Votclav Tablet is safe for use in children weighing 40 kg or more, when used as prescribed. Dose adjustment based on age, body weight, and infection type will be made by a pediatrician.

Can taking Votclav tablets cause Jaundice?

Yes, in rare cases, this medicine can affect the liver and cause Cholestatic Jaundice (due to impaired bile flow). Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, severe fatigue, or persistent nausea should be reported to a doctor immediately, as they could be indicative of liver failure.

Are there any drug interactions with Votclav Tablet?

Yes, Votclav Tablet can interact with Warfarin and other anticoagulants, Probenecid, and Allopurinol. These interactions can increase bleeding risk, raise Amoxycillin levels, and increase the severity of side effects. Also, discuss the use of antacids as they can reduce the efficacy of Votclav.

Does Votclav Tablet affect the efficacy of oral contraceptives?

Yes, Votclav Tablet can reduce the efficacy and reliability of some oral contraceptive pills. It is thus advised to discuss backup protection options with your doctor while taking Votclav and for a short time afterward.
