Optithrocin 5 gm is a prescription antibiotic ointment used to treat bacterial eye infections. It also helps treat other ocular bacterial infections affecting the eyelids or eye surface. It is 1% w/w composition of the well-known broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic, Azithromycin. It is manufactured by Entod Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in WHO GMP-certified facilities.
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, the process by which bacteria grow and multiply. This mechanism of action helps eliminate infection-causing bacteria. It thus reduces symptoms such as redness, swelling, irritation, and discharge from the eyes. For optimal results and reduced eye irritation, avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment.
Optithrocin ophthalmic ointment stays in contact with the eye surface for longer, as opposed to eye drops. This allows sustained antibacterial action and quicker recovery from conditions such as Bacterial Conjunctivitis, Blepharitis, and Trachoma.
The dosing schedule of Optithrocin 1% (w/w) 5 gm depends on the type and severity of infection, to be determined by an ophthalmologist. If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the next one. Do not apply extra to make up for it, as overuse may lead to antibiotic resistance.
Mild blurring of vision can occur after application. Inform your doctor if it persists for more than 15-30 minutes. Optithrocin is considered safe for use when used as directed. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women and those with existing eye conditions must consult their doctor before use.
Store Optithrocin 5 gm ointment below 25°C as instructed and discard it after the recommended duration, even if some product remains. Using it beyond its expiration date can worsen the condition.

Temporary blurred vision is the most common side effect of Opithrocin. But it usually clears up within 30 minutes. It may also cause some mild discomfort, such as:
Get medical attention if any of these symptoms persist, worsen, or if you experience severe irritation or swelling.
Liver Disease
Optithrocin is applied topically and has minimal absorption into the body. However, patients with liver conditions should still seek medical advice.
Kidney Impairment
No dose adjustment is usually required in mild to moderate kidney diseases. However, caution is advised in severe cases, especially with prolonged use.
Pregnant and Breastfeeding women
Optithrocin ophthalmic antibiotic therapy is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as prescribed. But due to limited safety data, it is best to consult a healthcare professional before use.
Avoid
Avoid using Optithrocin if you are allergic to Azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Do not wear contact lenses during this time. Prevent contamination of the tube tip and prolonged exposure to sunlight or screens.
Optithrocin is used to treat bacterial eye infections such as Trachoma or Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis), as well as Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation). It helps reduce redness, discharge, irritation, and inflammation caused by bacteria affecting the eyes or eyelids.
Optithrocin 5 gm eye ointment begins working to reduce bacterial symptoms within 24 to 48 hours. Improvement in symptoms, such as reduced redness and decreased discharge, becomes noticeable after 2-3 days with consistent application.
Wash your hands, tilt your head back, and pull down the lower eyelid. Then apply a thin strip (1.5 cm) of eye ointment inside the eyelid. Close the eye for 2-3 minutes to allow even spreading. Apply at bedtime for best absorption and retention.
In general, Azithromycin antibiotic eye ointment is used twice a day, so a gap of 8-12 hours is advisable. For more severe infections, you may need to use it every 4-6 hours. The exact spacing depends on the prescribed dosing schedule.
Use Optithrocin eye ointment for 3 days, twice daily. Then, once a day for the next 5 to 7 days as prescribed for most infections. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for dosing and complete the full treatment course as advised.
Improvement in symptoms, such as reduced redness, swelling, discharge, and discomfort, within 48 hours indicates that the Azithromycin antibiotic eye drop is working. If symptoms do not improve or worsen after 2-3 days, consult your doctor promptly.
Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment or touching the tube tip to any surface to prevent eye irritation and contamination. Do not stop treatment early, as infection can worsen or return. Never share eye medicines with others, even if symptoms appear similar.
Yes, temporary blurred vision may occur immediately after applying the ointment. This usually resolves itself within 15-20 minutes. Avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision becomes clear.
Store Optithrocin as instructed on the label, below 25°C. Keep it away from excessive heat and moisture. Use within the recommended period after opening and discard any remaining ointment. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
