Benzac AC 2.5% Gel is a topical treatment commonly prescribed for mild acne, inflammatory pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and clogged pores. Available in a 30 gm tube, it is manufactured by Galderma India Pvt. Ltd. in a WHO GMP-certified facility. Its active ingredient is FDA-approved Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% (w/w).
Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) belongs to the topical antibacterial and keratolytic drug class. When applied to the skin, it breaks down to release oxygen. This oxygen kills Acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium Acnes) that thrive in clogged pores. At the same time, it helps unclog pores, increase skin cell turnover and limit future breakouts.
Apply a thin layer of Benzac AC 2.5 Gel once daily to clean, dry skin, or as advised by your doctor. Do not skip use more than the prescribed quantity, as this may increase skin irritation without speeding up the results. If you miss an application, use it when you remember, but skip it if it is close to the next scheduled dose.
Benzac AC 2.5% Gel is meant for external use only. But do not apply to sunburned, windburned, broken, or irritated skin. Avoid contact with your lips, mouth, eyes, eyelids, and the inside of your nose. If accidental contact does occur, rinse thoroughly with water. Prevent contact with hair, fabrics, or colored materials to avoid bleaching.
Mild stinging, burning, and redness at the application site, and increased pimples are typical and likely in the first few weeks. It may make your skin more photosensitive, so avoid exposure to sunlight. However, report persistent or severe blistering, swelling or crusting to your doctor.
Inform your dermatologist if you have sensitive skin, skin allergies, or are using other Acne treatments. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, too, must confirm use with their physician.
Store it below 30°C, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep the tube tightly closed, out of reach of children.
Benzac AC 2.5% Gel is often recommended as a first-line topical Acne therapy due to good tolerability and effectiveness in daily Acne care routines. Its key benefits and uses are as follows:
Follow the dosage and usage instructions for Benzac AC 2.5% Gel as advised by a healthcare professional. General daily Acne application guidelines indicate:
Benzac AC is available as 2.5% (w/w) and 5% (w/v) gel formulation. You can also explore other Benzoyl Peroxide topical treatment options as substitutes. Some affordable options from GMP-certified manufacturers include:
| Pernex AC 2.5% Gel (20 gm) | $ 1.01/ 1 tube |
| Acnox 2.5 Gel (20 gm) | $ 1.19/ 1 tube |
| Bengel AC 2.5% Gel (30 gm) | $ 1.86/ 1 tube |
Most people tolerate Benzac AC (Benzoyl Peroxide) well when used as directed. Clinical studies also show that Benzoyl Peroxide causes fewer and generally milder side effects than topical retinoids (vitamin A derivatives).
However, you may experience one or more of these symptoms:
These are usually mild and temporary. Call your doctor if swelling, blistering, crusting, or persistent irritation occurs.
Liver Disease
Benzac gel is applied to the skin and does not significantly enter the bloodstream. It is considered safe for individuals with liver conditions when used as directed.
Kidney Impairment
No dose adjustment is required in kidney disease due to minimal absorption. However, caution is advised in long-term topical Acne therapy.
Pregnant and Breastfeeding women
Due to limited human studies regarding safety in women who are pregnant or planning to conceive, it should only be used if prescribed by a healthcare professional. Be careful that your baby does not come into contact with the areas of your body where you have applied BPO Gel.
Avoid
Avoid using Benzac AC 2.5 Gel if you are allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide or have other skin conditions. Do not combine with hair removal creams or skin care products, especially those containing spices or alcohol. Avoid exposure to the sun as it may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Yes, you can leave Benzac AC 2.5% Gel overnight, but only after the initial 3-day tolerance test. This will allow the medicine to work effectively against Acne-causing bacteria. If skin irritation occurs, your doctor may advise a shorter contact time or an alternative.
Benzoyl Peroxide may start reducing Acne within 1 to 2 weeks of consistent use. But a more visible improvement in Acne and lesion clearance can take anywhere from 4-10 weeks.
No, Benzac AC 2.5% Gel does not remove Acne scars or dark spots. However, due to reduced inflammation, your skin may seem lighter. It is used to treat active Acne and should never be used for cosmetic skin lightening.
Signs that indicate that Benzoyl Peroxide gel is working include fewer new pimples, reduced redness, and less oiliness. Initially, skin dryness or mild irritation may occur, but it usually improves as your skin adapts to the medication.
You may notice a temporary Acne flare or more pimples in the first 2-4 weeks of using Benzoyl Peroxide. This happens because it opens clogged pores and reveals underlying Acne surfaces. This phase usually settles with continued use after 4 weeks.
Avoid harsh scrubs, spice or alcohol-based products, and other Acne treatments while using Benzoyl Peroxide. Limit sun exposure as it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid contact with hair, fabrics, and colored clothing to avoid bleaching.
If you stop using Benzac AC 2.5 Gel too early, Acne may return. For safe, steady results, do not skip doses, stop abruptly, or use more than prescribed without medical guidance. Your dermatologist may switch you to alternate-day application or an alternative once the Acne clears up.
Yes, you can apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer (which doesn’t clog pores) once the gel has completely dried. It is best to avoid makeup if you have Acne, but you can apply it after the gel has fully dried.
Children under 12 years of age and pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5% Gel, unless prescribed by a doctor. It should not be used by individuals allergic to it, those with severely irritated or broken skin or those suffering from Eczema.
