Exocin Eye Ointment is used to treat bacterial eye infections, including Conjunctivitis, Corneal Ulcers, Keratitis, and Blepharitis. It contains FDA-approved Ofloxacin (0.3% w/w) as the active salt, which helps eliminate infection-causing bacteria and supports healing of the affected eye tissues. It is a Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacteria. Allergan India Pvt. Ltd. manufactures Exocin Eye Ointment in GMP-compliant facilities, ensuring quality and safety standards.
Ofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. This action stops bacterial growth and leads to bacterial death. The ointment is commonly prescribed for external ocular infections and is also used as post-operative prophylaxis to prevent infection after eye surgery.
The usual dose is a thin strip (about 0.5 cm) applied to the lower conjunctival sac 2 to 3 times every day, or as directed by a doctor, typically for up to 10 days. Hands should be washed before application, and care should be taken not to touch the ointment tip to the eye or surrounding skin. In case of overdose, rinse the eye gently with clean water and seek medical attention immediately if irritation is severe or persistent. If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as it is remembered, unless it is close to the next dose. Do not double the dose.
Common side effects include temporary burning, stinging, redness, and blurred vision. Medical attention is needed if there is severe eye pain, swelling, vision changes, or an allergic reaction such as a rash. Avoid use if allergic to Ofloxacin or for viral or fungal eye infections. Use with caution during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in children under one year. Remove contact lenses before use and maintain a 5 to 10 minute gap between other eye medications.
Store Exocin Eye Ointment below 25°C in a cool, dry place, tightly closed, away from light and children. Use before the expiry date.

However, if they continue or worsen, consult a doctor immediately.
Liver Disease
Exocin Eye Ointment is generally safe in patients with liver disease because it has very low systemic absorption when applied to the eye. No dose adjustment is needed in mild to moderate liver impairment. However, caution is advised in individuals with severe liver disease, and patients should consult a physician if they have advanced hepatic disease or notice unusual reactions.
Kidney Impairment
There are no specific safety issues in patients with kidney impairment, as topical application largely bypasses renal metabolism. Exocin Eye Ointment can be used safely in patients with mild to severe kidney disease without dose adjustment. With prolonged use, monitoring is advised to avoid the risk of secondary infections.
Pregnant and Breastfeeding women
It is not known if Ofloxacin ophthalmic can affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, as they will decide if use is appropriate. It is also unclear whether the medicine passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding women should consult their doctor for proper guidance.
Avoid
Exocin Eye Ointment should be avoided in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Ofloxacin, fluoroquinolones, or preservatives such as Benzalkonium Chloride. It should not be used for viral or fungal eye infections, infections caused by non-susceptible bacteria, or in infants under one year of age. Do not wear contact lenses during treatment.

Yes, you should gently close your eyes for 1-2 minutes after applying eye ointment. This allows the ointment to spread evenly across the eye surface, thereby improving its effectiveness. Avoid blinking forcefully or rubbing your eyes.
Yes, you must remove your contact lenses before applying eye ointment. Wearing lenses during treatment can trap the medicine, increase irritation, and raise the risk of infection. Avoid using contact lenses until your eye infection has fully cleared, and your doctor advises it is safe.
Yes, Exocin Eye Ointment can cause superinfection if used for a prolonged period. Long-term or unnecessary use may allow non-susceptible bacteria or fungi to grow. Use it only for the prescribed duration and consult your doctor if symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear.
Yes, you can sleep after applying eye ointment. In fact, using it before bedtime is often helpful because the ointment stays in the eye longer while you sleep. Just expect temporary blurred vision, which is normal after application.
