Moxiblu D 5 ml is a prescription-based ophthalmic (eye) solution used to treat bacterial infections and post-operative eye inflammation. It contains two FDA-approved active ingredients, Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride (0.5% w/v) and Dexamethasone Sodium (0.1% w/v). Moxifloxacin belongs to the Fluoroquinolone antibiotic class, while Dexamethasone is a Corticosteroid. This product is manufactured by Lupin Ltd., India, in GMP-compliant facilities.
Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes (topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase) that are essential for DNA replication, thereby killing the infection-causing bacteria. In contrast, Dexamethasone suppresses inflammation-promoting chemicals (prostaglandins and cytokines), helping reduce redness, pain, and swelling.
As an ophthalmic combination therapy, it is primarily used for treating bacterial infections, such as Conjunctivitis, and managing or preventing inflammation, itching, and redness after eye surgery or due to trauma. Some common side effects of this eye drop include temporary blurred vision, redness or dryness of the eyes, and a burning sensation.
Take Moxiblu D 5 ml exactly as prescribed; generally 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye, 3-4 times a day, for bacterial infection, and 4 times a day for 15 days for post-surgery use. In case of an overdose, immediately rinse the eye with clean water. When a dose is missed, instill it when remembered and skip it when it's close to the next dose.
Precautions include avoiding use with contact lenses and informing your doctor of any eye injuries, Glaucoma, or fungal/viral eye infections. Moreover, Moxiblu can interact with other steroid eye drops and immunosuppressants, increasing the risk of side effects. Therefore, avoid combining them with these medications.
Store the eye drop below 25°C and keep it away from direct light. Avoid freezing and keep the bottle tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children and pets, and discard the bottle 4 weeks after opening or by the expiry date.
This ophthalmic solution provides targeted relief for inflammation and eye infections. Primary Moxiblu D 5 ml benefits are:

Like any medication, Moxiblu D 5 ml may cause some side effects. Mostly, they are mild and temporary, subsiding as the eye adjusts. However, consult a doctor if the common effects persist or worsen:
Liver Disease
Moxiblu D is used topically in the eyes, resulting in minimal systemic absorption. Generally, it is considered safe for individuals with liver issues when used as prescribed. However, avoid excessive or long-term use without a doctor's supervision.
Kidney Impairment
Dose adjustments are usually not required in individuals with kidney issues since the medication acts locally. However, consult a doctor for extended use.
Pregnant and Breastfeeding women
Generally considered safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women. However, few studies have reported low birth weight with high corticosteroid dosage. Therefore, use it strictly when prescribed by a doctor.
Avoid
Avoid Moxiblu D 5 ml altogether if allergic to Dexametasone and Moxifloxacin. Remove contact lenses before use, and avoid combining the medication with other antibiotic or steroidal drops. Also, avoid using it long-term since it has steroids and can increase the risk of Glaucoma and secondary eye infections.
The exact duration Moxiblu takes to show results is not known. However, it can typically provide relief from symptoms such as redness, swelling, and pain within a few hours to a few days. Moreover, for a full antibacterial effect, it can take some days to clear the infection completely.
No, Moxiblu is not available over the counter and requires a valid prescription from the doctor, since it contains a steroid and an antibiotic. Therefore, it requires medical supervision to reduce the risk of Glaucoma, prevent misuse and antibiotic resistance.
Moxiblu D 5 ml has minimal interaction due to low systemic absorption from eye use. However, it can interact with other eye medications belonging to the class of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), increasing the risk of corneal thinning and delaying recovery. Therefore, wait at least 5-10 minutes between using multiple eye drops.
Moxifloxacin kills a broad spectrum of bacteria, including Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus spp. It also kills Gram-negative bacteria, including Klebsiella, Haemophilus influenzae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as anaerobes such as Clostridium spp. and Bacteroides fragilis, and others, such as Chlamydia trachomatis.
You should use Moxiblu eye drops for the prescribed duration, usually 7 to 15 days, even if symptoms improve earlier. It is suggested not to exceed 15 days with medical review to avoid risks associated with steroids.
If you use steroid eye drops for too long, it can increase the risk of elevated eye pressure and cataract formation, and can delay healing. Moreover, it can thin the cornea and make the eyes more prone to infections.
If you don't refrigerate eye drops, such as Moxiblu, they're fine at room temperature (15°C to 25°C), as they are formulated to be stored within this range. Temperatures above this range can degrade its active ingredients and reduce its effectiveness.
