Restasis 0.05% Ophthalmic Emulsion contains an active ingredient, Cyclosporine, which is used in the treatment of dry eyes. Dry eye (Xeropthalmia) is a situation in which the eye fails to make adequate tears to coat it that exposes the cornea & conjunctiva (outer coverings of the eye) to evaporation & subsequent damage. Dry eye may be due to the deficiency of either aqueous component or mucus or both. Main causes of decreased mucus production owing to degeneration of conjunctival/corneal epithelium are Vitamin A deficiency, Burns, Infections like trachoma, diphtheria or Eyelid abnormalities – ectropion, proptosis. Main causes of decreased tear production by lacrimal gland are Sjogren Syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis or Systemic Lupus Erythematous.
