What is Niftas 50 mg

Niftas 50 Tablet is a urinary antibacterial agent used to treat uncomplicated lower Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and bladder infections. It contains 50 mg of Nitrofurantoin, an FDA-approved oral antibiotic. It is manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in GMP-certified facilities and is supplied as a strip of 10 tablets.

Nitrofurantoin works by entering susceptible bacteria and damaging their essential proteins and genetic material. This prevents bacteria from surviving and multiplying in the urinary tract. Because of this action, it is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It is also prescribed to prevent recurring UTIs in selected cases.

Niftas 50 Tablet is best taken with food to help the body absorb it and tolerate it better. Take it exactly as prescribed and do not stop early, as the infection may return and become harder to treat. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, unless your next one is due soon. Do not take multiple pills together.

Common side effects of Niftas tablets include nausea, vomiting, Diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. In some cases, the urine can turn dark yellow or brown, which returns to normal once treatment ends. Avoid excess alcohol, grapefruit juice, and calcium-rich foods or drinks close to the dose. Seek urgent medical help if you notice breathing trouble, severe rash, persistent Diarrhea, chest pain, or unusual tingling and weakness.

Niftas is not recommended in people with kidney disease, Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, Epilepsy, Myasthenia Gravis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, or organ transplant. It should not be used by men whose urinary infection may be related to prostatitis and by women in late pregnancy or during labor.

Store the tablets below 30°C, away from heat and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

What are the benefits of taking Niftas 50 mg tablet

Niftas 50 mg tablet helps treat several UTIs. Its key benefits and uses include:

  • Fights off a wide range of bacteria: It is effective against several susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, Enterococci, Staphylococci, Citrobacter, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter bacteria.
  • Prevents recurrent infections: In selected patients, Nitrofurantoin can also be used to help prevent repeated lower urinary infections.
  • Improves symptoms quickly: Most patients begin to feel relief from burning, urgency, and discomfort within 2-3 days. However, the full course must still be completed to clear the infection completely.

What are the side effects of Niftas 50 mg

Niftas 50 Tablet can cause the following side effects during treatment:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach discomfort

Most of these side effects are temporary and often settle once treatment is completed. Consult a doctor if you develop bloody Diarrhea, an allergic reaction, nerve-related weakness, numbness and tingling or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Safety Advice

Liver Disease

Due to the rare but possible risk of Hepatitis or Cholestatic Jaundice in patients with liver impairment, regular liver function monitoring is recommended. Persistent nausea, yellowing of the eyes, or unusual tiredness with Niftas should be reported promptly.

Kidney Impairment

Since Nitrofurantoin needs adequate kidney function to reach effective levels in urine, reduced renal function can increase the chance of toxicity. Niftas Tablet should thus be used with caution in patients with Chronic Kidney Failure.

Pregnant and Breastfeeding women

Niftas can sometimes be prescribed in pregnancy for lower UTI or recurrent infections, but it must be avoided near term and during labor due to the risk of Hemolysis (premature destruction of red blood cells) in the baby. Caution is also advised for breastfeeding women.

Avoid

Avoid Niftas tablet in people with G6PD deficiency, or in men with UTIs related to prostatitis. Do not use if you have Myasthenia Gravis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Epilepsy, or a history of organ transplant. Do not consume alcohol, grapefruit juice, calcium-rich foods or drinks, Magnesium trisilicate antacids and Quinolone antibiotics (Levofloxacin or Moxifloxacin) near your dose, as they can reduce effectiveness and increase side effects.

FAQs

How often should Niftas 50 tablets be taken for UTI?

Niftas 50 Tablet should be taken only in the dose and frequency prescribed by your doctor. Typically, 100 mg Nitrofurantoin is advised 2-3 times daily for a period of 5 to 7 days. Do not skip any doses or stop the treatment early to allow the infection to be cleared completely.

Does Niftas 50 help treat kidney problems?

No, Niftas 50 Tablet is not used to treat kidney infections or kidney problems. Nitrofurantoin works mainly in the lower urinary tract, so it is better suited for bladder infections and uncomplicated lower UTIs. Consult a nephrologist for suspected kidney issues.

What is the recommended adult Niftas 50 dosage per day?

The recommended adult dose of Niftas 50 Tablet depends on its use. Typically, a 50-100 mg dose is prescribed daily for the prevention of recurrent UTI and 2-4 times daily for an active infection. Your doctor will determine your dosing schedule based on the infection, your age, kidney function, and treatment response.

What happens if you take Niftas Tablet without food?

Taking Niftas tablets without food can increase stomach discomfort and other side effects. It is thus better to take it with food to improve absorption and lower nausea, vomiting or Diarrhea.

Can I stop Niftas after 3 days if I feel better?

No, you should not stop taking Niftas 50 Tablet after 3 days because you feel better. Stopping it early may allow some bacteria to survive, which can cause the infection to return and become more difficult to treat. You should always complete your full course (5-7 days), as prescribed.

Does Niftas 50 mg tablet affect urine color?

Yes, Niftas 50 mg Tablet can turn your urine dark yellow or brown. This is a known and usually harmless effect of Nitrofurantoin. The color change is temporary and generally returns to normal after the medicine is stopped.

What are Niftas 50 mg alternatives to treat UTI?

Alternatives to Niftas 50 mg include Fosfomycin, Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole and beta-lactam antibiotics like Amoxicillin or Cephalosporin. The doctor will prescribe another urinary antibiotic depending on the type of urinary infection, bacterial sensitivity, pregnancy status, and kidney function.
