What is Tagrisso 80 mg tablet

Tagrisso 80 mg is a targeted oral anticancer medicine for treating Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR gene) mutation-positive Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). It blocks mutated EGFR proteins, which stop cancer cells from growing and spreading. It contains Osimertinib, a third-generation Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI) used to treat patients with advanced, metastatic, and locally advanced cases with specific EGFR mutations.

It is manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, a global leader in precision oncology. The medicine is FDA-approved and has been used by 1 million+ patients worldwide across multiple NSCLC stages.

Common mild side effects include diarrhea, rash, dry skin and fatigue. If symptoms like severe shortness of breath, chest pain, or sudden vision changes occur, immediate medical attention is needed. Additionally, patients with a history of heart issues, lung disease, or eye disorders should use Tagrisso cautiously under medical supervision.

Since Osimertinib can harm the fetus, couples are typically advised to use contraceptive methods to avoid pregnancy. Likewise, breastfeeding mothers need to be careful when on this medicine as it can pass to the infant through milk. Moreover, alcohol and grapefruit juice are to be avoided.

What are the benefits of Tagrisso 80 mg tablet

Tagrisso selectively inhibits the mutated forms of the EGFR protein, blocking signals that promote cancer cell growth. This targeted action helps reduce tumor size and progression of disease, thereby improving quality of life and extending survival.

It is the first-line and adjuvant (additional) therapy in precision oncology, used alone or in combination with Chemotherapy for enhanced survival outcomes. Its benefits include:

  • Targeted action: Osimertinib directly inhibits cancer-driving EGFR mutations while sparing normal cells.
  • Improved survival: In the Flaura-2 clinical trial, which involved 557 subjects, patients showed longer Progression-Free Survival (PFS), especially when combined with pemetrexed and platinum-based Chemotherapy.
  • Convenient oral use: You can take it once daily as a tablet at home itself and avoid hospital visits for infusions.
  • Activity on the brain: Its unique ability to cross the blood-brain barrier helps treat CNS (Central Nervous System) metastases.
  • Better tolerability: Compared to older EGFR inhibitors, Tagrisso causes fewer severe skin or gastrointestinal side effects.

How to take Tagrisso 80 mg tablet

Swallow the tablet whole with water, at the same time every day. It can, however, be taken with or without food. Always follow your oncologist’s advice for the best outcomes. The usual adult dose is 80 mg once daily, but it should only be taken as the oncologist advises.

If you face difficulty swallowing tablets,

  • Disperse the tablet in 50 mL of water in a glass.
  • Stir the water until the tablet breaks up into tiny pieces. The tablet will not completely dissolve.
  • Do not crush or heat the tablet solution.
  • Drink the liquid immediately.
  • Rinse the glass with another 50-100 mL of water and drink it.
  • Do not use carbonated water.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it within 12 hours; otherwise, skip it.
  • Never double-dose, as it may cause severe side effects. Seek emergency medical care in case of an overdose.

Store in a cool and dry place away from sunlight, preferably between 20 and 25 °C (68 and 77°F). Keep Tagrisso 80Mg tablet out of reach of children and pets.

  • Nail infections

Most side effects are manageable with monitoring; report persistent or severe reactions to your doctor.

Safety advice

Liver problemsLiver disease

No specific dose adjustment is recommended for mild hepatic impairment, but moderate to severe cases require careful assessment. This is because in such cases, the medicine may build up in the body and raise the risk of side effects.

CardiovascularKidney impairment

It is deemed safe for patients with mild to moderate kidney issues, as the body is able to clear out the medicine from your system. Tagrisso is not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min) or those on dialysis.

PregnancyPregnant and breastfeeding women

Osimertinib is unsafe during pregnancy as it may harm the fetus. So, both men and women must use effective contraception during and for weeks after stopping the treatment as advised by the doctor. It is not recommended during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk.

Some NSCLC cells may eventually become resistant and transform into Small-Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). Thus, regular monitoring through blood tests and imaging is essential.

wineAvoid

Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice during treatment. Drink plenty of water daily to stay hydrated and manage side effects. Patients should stop smoking for the best possible outcomes.

FAQs

Is Tagrisso a form of chemo?

No. Tagrisso is not Chemotherapy. It is a targeted EGFR inhibitor that blocks cancer cell pathways and offers precision treatment with fewer side effects as compared to traditional Chemotherapy.

Can Tagrisso cure stage 4 lung cancer?

No. Tagrisso cannot cure stage 4 NSCLC, but it can help control cancer progression and shrink tumors, especially when combined with Chemotherapy. It helps extend Progression-Free Survival and improve the quality of life in patients with EGFR-mutated disease.

How long does Tagrisso usually work?

Many patients benefit from Tagrisso for 18-24 months or more before resistance develops in the body. Additionally, ongoing studies show an extended survival rate when combined with other therapies such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy.

What is the success rate of Tagrisso 80 mg?

Tagrisso has demonstrated a substantial success profile across different lung cancer stages. In the ADAURA adjuvant trial, nearly 85-88% of patients treated with Tagrisso remained alive and disease-free five years after surgery, compared to 73-78% on placebo.

What is the life expectancy of a person on Tagrisso?

The life expectancy of a person taking Tagrisso depends on their individual health and cancer type. Median overall survival for many patients can be more than 3 years after starting treatment for EGFR-mutated lung cancer. Some may live even longer if their cancer responds well.

Why is Tagrisso so expensive?

The price of Tagrisso is high as it reflects the extensive research, clinical trials, and manufacturing of a targeted therapy. However, generic options are available at offline or online pharmacies. Moreover, insurance, patient support foundations and AstraZeneca’s patient assistance program may help reduce costs.

How much is Osimertinib in the USA?

On average, the price of Tagrisso 80 mg in the United States is relatively high, often exceeding $15,000 per month without insurance. Tagrisso 80 mg price in Indian pharmacies is significantly lower. We offer discreet packaging and worldwide delivery of authentic Osimertinib for a monthly supply at $8,730.00.

What is the best time to take Tagrisso?

The best time to take Tagrisso is at the same time each day, either with or without food. Staying consistent helps keep steady medicine levels in your body, which is important for the best results. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

How much water to drink with Tagrisso?

To take the tablet, either swallow it whole or dissolve it in 50-60 mL of water and consume it. In addition, it is recommended to stay well hydrated throughout the day as adequate hydration can help manage side effects like diarrhea and improve other symptoms.

How do I know if Tagrisso 80 mg Tablet is working?

Signs that your Tagrisso treatment is working include fewer breathing difficulties, improved energy, and tumor size reduction. Your doctor will regularly monitor your condition with imaging or blood tests to identify its impact on the disease. Even if symptoms improve, never stop the medication on your own.

When to stop Tagrisso before surgery?

Do not stop or restart Tagrisso on your own. Doctors will advise patients to stop Tagrisso 3 or more days before major surgery to reduce risks and side effects related to wound healing and organ stress. Your doctor will also decide the right time to restart it after surgery.

What happens when you stop Tagrisso?

Stopping Osimertinib may cause cancer progression or return of symptoms. Only stop or change medication under your oncologist’s advice. This is usually recommended due to side effects or when resistance occurs.

What is the long-term side effect of Tagrisso?

Some serious, long-term side effects reported by patients on Osimertinib are eye pain, blurry vision and vision changes, shortness of breath, Interstitial lung disease or Pneumonitis. It can also cause blood disorders such as low red blood cell count (Aplastic Anemia), low platelet levels (Thrombocytopenia), and low white blood cell levels (Leukopenia).

What is the alternative to Tagrisso?

Alternatives to Tagrisso include Gefitinib, Erlotinib, Afatinib, Acomitinib, or newer antibodies like Amivantamab. Your oncologist will decide which to use based on your mutation type, treatment stage, and resistance profile.
