What is Tagrisso 80 mg tablet

Tagrisso 80 mg is a targeted oral anticancer medicine for treating Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR gene) mutation-positive Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). It blocks mutated EGFR proteins, which stop cancer cells from growing and spreading. It contains Osimertinib, a third-generation Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI) used to treat patients with advanced, metastatic, and locally advanced cases with specific EGFR mutations.

It is manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, a global leader in precision oncology. The medicine is FDA-approved and has been used by 1 million+ patients worldwide across multiple NSCLC stages.

Common mild side effects include diarrhea, rash, dry skin and fatigue. If symptoms like severe shortness of breath, chest pain, or sudden vision changes occur, immediate medical attention is needed. Additionally, patients with a history of heart issues, lung disease, or eye disorders should use Tagrisso cautiously under medical supervision.

Since Osimertinib can harm the fetus, couples are typically advised to use contraceptive methods to avoid pregnancy. Likewise, breastfeeding mothers need to be careful when on this medicine as it can pass to the infant through milk. Moreover, alcohol and grapefruit juice are to be avoided.

What are the benefits of Tagrisso 80 mg tablet

Tagrisso selectively inhibits the mutated forms of the EGFR protein, blocking signals that promote cancer cell growth. This targeted action helps reduce tumor size and progression of disease, thereby improving quality of life and extending survival.

It is the first-line and adjuvant (additional) therapy in precision oncology, used alone or in combination with Chemotherapy for enhanced survival outcomes. Its benefits include:

How to take Tagrisso 80 mg tablet

Swallow the tablet whole with water, at the same time every day. It can, however, be taken with or without food. Always follow your oncologist’s advice for the best outcomes. The usual adult dose is 80 mg once daily, but it should only be taken as the oncologist advises.

If you face difficulty swallowing tablets,

• Disperse the tablet in 50 mL of water in a glass.
• Stir the water until the tablet breaks up into tiny pieces. The tablet will not completely dissolve.
• Do not crush or heat the tablet solution.
• Drink the liquid immediately.
• Rinse the glass with another 50-100 mL of water and drink it.
• Do not use carbonated water.

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it within 12 hours; otherwise, skip it.
• Never double-dose, as it may cause severe side effects. Seek emergency medical care in case of an overdose.

Store in a cool and dry place away from sunlight, preferably between 20 and 25 °C (68 and 77°F). Keep Tagrisso 80Mg tablet out of reach of children and pets.

Strengths and Substitutes

Tagrisso is available in strengths of 40 mg and 80 mg, but we currently only offer 80mg tablets. No generic Osimertinib is presently available, so it has no substitutes.

What are the side effects of Tagrisso 80 mg Tablet

The most common side effects of Tagrisso include:

• Diarrhea
• Rash, blistering, or skin lesions
• Loss of appetite
• Mouth sores (Stomatitis)
• Nail infections
• Fatigue

Most side effects are manageable with monitoring; report persistent or severe reactions to your doctor.

Safety advice

Liver disease

No specific dose adjustment is recommended for mild hepatic impairment, but moderate to severe cases require careful assessment. This is because in such cases, the medicine may build up in the body and raise the risk of side effects.

Kidney impairment

It is deemed safe for patients with mild to moderate kidney issues, as the body is able to clear out the medicine from your system. Tagrisso is not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min) or those on dialysis.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women

Osimertinib is unsafe during pregnancy as it may harm the fetus. So, both men and women must use effective contraception during and for weeks after stopping the treatment as advised by the doctor. It is not recommended during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk.

Some NSCLC cells may eventually become resistant and transform into Small-Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). Thus, regular monitoring through blood tests and imaging is essential.

Avoid

Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice during treatment. Drink plenty of water daily to stay hydrated and manage side effects. Patients should stop smoking for the best possible outcomes.
